Purpose

Creating avenues of ministry in order to build relationships is key to our purpose of reaching and equipping people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Downtown Ministries does this through our sports programs, after-school tutoring, and various community services.

Our football, cheerleading, and basketball programs provide the opportunity for kids--and their families--to come together as a team.  Currently, over 200 at-risk youth in Athens have participated in a sporting event sponsored by Downtown Ministries.   

After-school tutoring offers children the opportunity to get individual help with homework from one of our committed volunteers or just work on math and reading skills. During this time, we also offer the kids a snack and time to hang out with people who care about them.

Through DTM volunteers, Christmas gift outreaches, vacation bible school, and specific community projects, we strive to develop new ways to meet needs.  Recently, our Director of Education was trained to facilitate Darkness to Light: Adults Protecting Children workshops as a step in recognizing and preventing the sexual abuse of children.

Each child who is involved with us represents a unique story and a specific need and we are excited for the opportunity to be involved in their lives.
